520			_aIn a research report on ‘The Value of Culture’, Pascal Gielen, Sophie Elkhuizen Quirijn van den Hoogen, Thijs Lijster and Hanka Otte, a team of sociologists, philosophers and art scholars from the Rijksuniversiteit of Groningen, assembled a series of research results on the value, meaning and impact of the arts and culture on people within society. The research team re-framed our commission in an inspiring way. They indeed developed a conceptual framework of measurable effects of arts and culture on society and they compiled an inventory of concrete research results. But foremost, their book is a plea for placing the non measurable impact of culture in the heart of the debate. The question about the value of culture touches upon crucial issues about (the decline of) shared and common values in our society and upon the way we give meaning to our lives. The arts and culture are important building blocks of open, democratic and diverse societies.
