520 _aThe environment in which enterprises operate is in a state of profound change. Governments can no longer be counted upon to sustain the growth of the cultural sector and, in many cases, have drastically reduced the budgets allocated to this sector. Local and international competition is intensifying, audiences are changing, and the arrival of culturally diverse citizens is altering the fabric of our major cities. Faced with these changes in their environment, cultural organizations have been forced to consider different approaches to management, to pool their resources and to exchange services. In short, they have had to come to terms with a changing reality. What is that reality? What further changes can be expected in the future? What kind of pressures do these changes place on cultural managers? What transformations do organizations need to undertake? And how can these transformations be managed? These are just a few of the pressing questions addressed by participants at the colloquium Cultural Organizations of the Future, which brought together academics and practitioners from the cultural sector in order to share their analyses, experiences and reflections on the major issues confronting cultural and arts organizations. We are very pleased to present you with the results of this undertaking. These proceedings contain the full text of the papers given in November 1997 at the École des Hautes Études Commerciales in Montréal. They are arranged in order of presentation. In addition to the opening and closing addresses, the reader will find the papers of three sessions organized around the themes of, respectively, "The Arts in Transition", "Changes in the Cultural Products Market" and "Changing Organizations".
